This tutorial assumes familiarity with the various tools and menu bars in PhotoImpact. These objects, once finished, can be resized in PhotoImpact using the transform tool. But if you want to learn how to make your own filmstrip, let's begin!

1. Open a new file 640 X 480.

2. Select path tool (2D). Draw a black rectangle path, 560 X 107 pixels.

3. With path still selected, click on Continue Draw Mode.
4. Draw a tiny box & switch to edit path mode.

5. Select the tiny box, and R/C / duplicate path.
Remember, you may select all the small boxes by drawing a bounding box around them while in path edit mode.

6. With all the tiny boxes selected, R/C and select align top. Then R/C and select Distribute Horizontally. With all the squares selected, R/C and duplicate path. Move the second path to the bottom of the filmstrip. Now make a large box, Copy/Duplicate and align top, then distribute horizontally. You'll end up with a path edit like this:

7. When you are happy with the path, click the toggle button on the attributes toolbar, then click on the path button to exit path edit mode.
You will now have a black rectangle with white boxes lining the top and bottom lines, and large boxes separating them.

8. Click the path tool, and select horizontal deform mode from the attributes bar. You will see a bounding box with four red squares across the top and bottom lines. They are control points. When you click on them, you can move their handles to change the contour of the filmstrip holes. Click Ctrl-Shift G to start guidelines. Follow the graphic below to continue.

9. On attributes toolbar, click 2D object. With the filmstrip selected, go back to path edit mode.Click in the middle of the box to deselect the path, and then click on the top line of the rectangle, which is straight and extends between points 1 & 2.

10. When you are finished click the toggle, then exit path edit mode.

11. You should have a graphic that matches this pretty closely. Now select the area in each large square with the magic wand and fill with the graphic of your choice.
Confirm "Search Connected Pixels" is checked on the selection attributes bar.
Use "Fit the Image" when you load your image. Follow the gif below for the details.

THE SHADOW NOTES: Be sure the film object is the top layer. With the layer selected, R/C, and add a shadow. Now select Object, Split Shadow. This will separate the shadow from the film strip. Select the shadow, and R/C, move to the bottom layer.
