3D Rotation

Skill level: All

I discovered something recently by accident. I thought that PI would only save 2d paths when you rotate something in 3D Virtual. I was wrong.

Open a 400X400 image, and select 2D object from the Path menu. Select and draw this custom shape, or any shape that suits your fancy.

With the object selected, click on the Transform tool. Its the on just above the eyedropper on my screen capture. Then on the attributes toolbar, select the Rotate in Virtual 3D button (a circle with axis arrows).

You'll have one of two grids to select from, and you may toggle between the two by double clicking. The round one will rotate the object, and the squares adjust your viewing angle of the object. Play with them a bit to see how they operate.

When you have finished playing with the object, Rotate it in an orientation that you like. Select the path tool again and on the Mode box, check it's options. After transforming, you have only 3 choices. That is where I usually stopped..I had never had a reason to continue draw...but I found something when I clicked it.

Select Continue Draw now, and then select the mode button again, and now you have a full menu again. Select 3D round. Select Continue Draw now, and then select the mode button again, and now you have a full menu again. Select 3D round. From here, you may change the Border, Gradient, Reflection, etc.

Now, PI is not a true 3D program, and your results may vary. I found I got better results from using shapes that I had created in Expression. You might try this if you have the program, or Draw 3D. Both will create nice .AI (Adobe Illustrator files).
