Torn Photograph

Version 6 and up
Skill level: All
Tools used: = R/C

I was challenged recently by a question on how to make a torn edge effect in PI. I began playing with the idea and developed this method. Now, this tutorial assumes familiarity with the various tools and menu bars in PhotoImpact.  If you are a newbie, don't worry, this is a simple tutorial. Just follow the directions and you'll do fine.  If you have trouble with anything, email me. That's the best way to contact me.

1. Open and duplicate image.  Close original image.

2. Merge all, if there are layers.

3. Format/Frame and Shadow. Select default option & click OK. This will put a white border around your pic.

4. Using the rectangle path tool, create a path that is same height but half the width of your photo.

5. With path selected, switch to path edit mode. Add a series of points down the path line bisecting the image. After you have them added, grab and pull them out of alignment slightly as shown.

6. When you're pleased with the edge, change the path attributes from 2D to a selection.

7. Copy/Paste.

8. R/C, then invert selection.

9. Copy/Paste. Now you should have two separate objects, each with a jagged edge.

10. Select the paint tool, color white, size 2-3. Select one of the halves, and use Shift P to paint on edge.

11. Change paint tool size to 5-6. Select other object and press Shift P.

12. Click on Retouch tool, Bristle Smear. Smear the edges to give a roughened appearance to the photo. Don't overdo it, you may always make a change.

13. Select one object, and using transform tool, rotate 5-10 degrees clockwise. Select remaining object and repeat rotation in opposite direction.

14. Ctrl Shift A to select all objects. Using the pick tool, drag your objects to a new image.

15. Deselect, then Ctrl F to fill with your choice of background.

16. Shift S to add shadows to each object.

Thanks for trying this. Please email me if you have trouble.
